As the sun was setting to the west, Kyle left the Palmer property, walking in the warmth of the evening toward town and the bed and breakfast. His mind wandered as he went, thoughts of his decision to sing for the town’s celebration brought up his current dilemma regarding his future in the music business. He loved singing but writing the music and lyrics were where his heart truly lie. A small and incredibly selfish part of him didn’t want anyone else recording his songs… he wanted to. However, if he wanted to become successful enough to continue making recordings, then he needed to tour and he hated that aspect. Kyle sighed and shook his head, trying, in vain, to find the miracle solution that would give him everything he wanted.

As the bed and breakfast came into view in the distance, Kyle’s turbulent thoughts shifted to his growing attraction to the beautiful owner of Peace’s only inn. Everything about Stella drew him to her but his status as short term guest automatically made her off limits. He could never be so callous with her.

When Kyle stepped into the cool interior of the hotel, he looked around, seeing only Princess Sophie. With a small smirk he approached the cat. He pulled out the pouch of cat treats he’d tucked into his pocket in case he got the chance to tempt the huge Maine Coon. Sophie meowed softly as though her desire to have more of the tempting little nibbles had created an internal conflict fueled by her desire to remain aloof and foul-tempered. Placing a couple of the treats on the counter, Kyle smiled as she quickly ate them. By the time he closed the pouch, Sophie had deemed him worthy and had eaten a few from the palm of his hand. With a small smile and a scratch under her chin, Kyle left the lobby and went to his room.

The window was open in his room and the fresh air tempted him to take his guitar outside and continue enjoying the warm summer evening with its soft earthy scents of wheat, sage, and sunshine promising to further relax him. Throwing caution to the wind, Kyle lifted his guitar case onto his bed and gently brought his acoustic guitar out. Leaving the cat treats on the dresser, he pocketed the key to his room and a couple picks then left the room again with his guitar.

The memory of having seen a whitewashed swing hanging on the back porch off the large gathering room, Kyle took a right off the stairs. He crossed the room and stepped out into the gathering darkness. Porch lights brightened the space while an arrangement of chairs and small tables invited guests to mingle. Kyle made a beeline for the swing in the right side corner of the porch and sat down. He stretched his fingers a bit since it had been days since he’d touched a guitar. Settling himself, he ran his fingers down the strings then pressed his hand to them, silencing the sound.
